Susan M. Kansagra, MD, MBA

Dr. Susan M. Kansagra serves as the State Health Officer for North Carolina and the Assistant Secretary for Public Health for the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services. She leads the North Carolina Division of Public Health and provides leadership and oversight of policies and programs that promote the health and wellbeing of North Carolinians. Dr. Kansagra helped lead her state’s COVID-19 pandemic response efforts and was the driving force behind development of North Carolina’s first Opioid Action Plan.
Her previous roles include serving as Deputy Commissioner at the New York City (NYC) Health Department, where she led nationally-recognized public health policies and programs aimed at reducing chronic disease. She previously served as an assistant vice president of population health at NYC Health + Hospitals, where she led clinical quality improvement initiatives for the country’s largest public health care system.
Dr. Kansagra has published extensively on topics related to public health and served as board president for the National Association of Chronic Disease Directors. She is a recipient of the Governor’s Award for Excellence for Outstanding State Service. Dr. Kansagra completed her undergraduate degree at UNC-Chapel Hill, her graduate degrees at Duke University, and her medical training at Massachusetts General Hospital.
