Susan M. Kansagra, MD, MBA

Dr. Susan M. Kansagra serves as Acting Deputy State Health Officer/Senior Deputy Director for the NC Division of Public Health. In this capacity, she provides leadership across Division of Public Health programs including Chronic Disease and Injury, the State Public Health Lab, and NC’s Covid-19 response efforts.
Her previous roles include serving as Deputy Commissioner at the New York City (NYC) Health Department, where she led nationally-recognized public health policies and programs aimed at reducing chronic disease. She previously served as an assistant vice president of population health at NYC Health + Hospitals, where she led clinical quality improvement initiatives for the country’s largest public health care system.
She has published extensively on topics related to public health and served as board president for the National Association of Chronic Disease Directors.
Dr. Kansagra completed her internal medicine training at Massachusetts General Hospital. She received her Doctor of Medicine and business degrees from Duke University.
