Richard Hamburg, MPA

Richard Hamburg has been executive director of Safe States Alliance since March 2018. Hamburg previously served as executive vice president and chief operating officer at Trust for America’s Health, where he oversaw public policy initiatives and advocacy campaigns. He also served as the American Heart Association’s national director of government relations.
At Safe States, Hamburg is responsible for providing direction and leadership to advance the mission and implement the strategic plan. He advocates for the field of injury and violence prevention and professionals’ interests with federal agencies and partners. He is a nationally recognized advocate with more than 35 years of experience as a public health advocate and leader.
Hamburg serves in several leadership positions. He is chair of the Association of State and Territorial Health Officials Affiliate Council, treasurer of the board for the Institute for Public Health Innovation, and a member of the steering committees for the Well Being Work Group and the Collaborative for Effective Prescription Opioid Policies.
Hamburg received a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science and a Master of Public Administration from the State University of New York at Albany.
